Although I have been hunting and fishing my whole life, fishing takes a backseat, especially during hunting season. The decision to go on a fishing trip during archery season was a hard one, but the fact that I would be fiming for Brian Doty's Extreme Outdoor Adventures made it a little easier. I traveled to Corpus with Brians and his wife and co-host Misty, and arrived at Bluffs Landing on Sunday afternoon. After checking out all of the lodging available and acquiring footage for the show, we settled in to the house that we would be staying in. Great accomodations for a fishing camp! It was a modern style house with three bedrooms and two baths, not to mention a full kitchen and living room. And an awesome view of Corpus Christi Bay. We got a little rest and then were treated to a great meal of grilled mahi-mahi and grilled shrimp. We would need to leave the marina early the next morning because we had a 40 mile boat ride to "the hole".
It was a chilly ride in the early morning air, but was well worth it when the fish started biting. Misty really put a hurt on the fish, and caught 3 good fish before Brian could get his bait in the water. Captain Warren really knew his stuff and before too long, Brian and Misty had their limits of redfish and black drum. Seeing the the day was young and their limits met, Captain Warren hooked me up. Literally. He set the hook on a big fish and handed me the rod. After 4 or 5 minutes I began to understand the reason that Misty was so tired. Afer all, she had caught 15 or 20 fish by herself, not to be outdone by the guys. My first fish turned out to be an almost 30" red. We proceeded to catch more fish using live shrimp for bait, and by noon I had my limit as well.
The boat ride back to the marina seemed shorter in the warm mid day air. Captain Warren entertained me with stories of the Kenedy and King Ranch shoreline. We spotted javelina and many kinds of ducks throughout the day, but thoughts of the big buck that waits for me in Kansas next week was never too far away. Too much to do when I get home, but in the end I was glad to make the trip to south Texas. I really got to know Brian and Misty better and look forward to working with them in the future. They are what we call "good people" and I believe that they will go far. If you get the Sportsmens Channel you can check out their show, and if not please call you subscriber and let them know that this channel is in high demand.
Gotta go pack up for Kansas. Good hunting AND fishing.
