Opening Morning

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I started out on opening morning the good lord presented a beautiful moon in the west that was near full. I believed I could have walked miles to my deer stand without the aid of a flashlight. The eastern horizon had a slight glow of light blue sky that melded in to the black of night as I headed eastward. A cool breeze made for this picture perfect opening morning of whitetail season.

I settled in gazing at the sunrise. The oceanic blue of the horizon now had a cirrus cloud layer that exerted golden yellows and oranges from the sun that was still below earth’s edges. I sighed with the comfort of ecstasy as I leaned back and took a deep breath because this is why I love to hunt. God’s majesty revealing itself knowing that there was that possibility of seeing that elusive huge whitetail buck as the sun make it’s one and only ‘opening day’ appearance.

I looked forward again, only to see the sun make its debut. This is when I went in to my ‘opening morning’ prayer. “God, Thank you for the sun rises each morning. Thank you for nature’s beauty. You are an awesome God and I ask that you protect and guide my family and friends and to be with our soldiers. Protect and give them your comfort through their hardships as they endeavor to protect the freedom of the world. And Lord, if you will let me see just one magnificent buck I promise I will try harder to be a better person”.

I must have been in natures trance when a glimpse of my peripheral vision sent a message to my brain. I slowly rolled my eyes to the right. Was it…Maybe it was…but, it was still a little to dark. But then there was another glimpse. What was that? It moved…Yes, Yes it’s a deer. Wait it’s doe…Ohh, there’s another one. It’s a big Buck…The magnificent Buck I prayed for, there he is. My fingers start twitching and my heart is beating out of my chest. Thoughts of how far is he, which pin should I use, I need to turn on the glow site, where’s my glow knock arrow. My mind is racing with an infinite number of thoughts every second. I am not an experience bow hunter but, I need to remember all of the right things to do and quickly. He’s here.

Then I slowed the car and pulled to the shoulder of the road. This guy must have been a 10-point maybe a 12-point with a very wide spread and good mass. He was beautiful and had probably 5 does with him. He nonchalantly lifted his head, looked at me then turned and walked back in to trees at the side of the road.

Yep, opening morning and I’m on my way to work. I envy you guys who actually got to hunt opening morning. I don’t have a bow yet but none-the-less I did get to have an opening morning experience. Yes, this sighting was the truth as I encountered the buck and does just off of highway 70 near Lake Murray on my 45 mile drive to work. I’ve thought about you guys all day especially this morning as the sun was coming up and when my prayers were answered. I envisioned all of you at your stands this morning, watching the beautiful sunrise. Good luck to each and every one of you. Be safe and I hope your prayers are answered on ‘Opening Morning’. For me, I have promised to be a better person an intend on doing just that.
